You can’t consent to a camera you can’t see.

A light isn’t consent. You can’t refuse what you can’t see.
Today you’re recorded unless you object – and objecting makes you the difficult one. A standard makes refusal possible in the first place.
The problem with the status quo
Meta’s answer? “Don’t worry, there’s a light.” A light you can miss, disable, or cover isn’t a signal. The default is backwards – and the norms for smart glasses are being written right now.
Why now
The EU AI Act’s transparency rules are here and the norms for smart glasses are being written right now. Get one standard right and it protects everyone in the frame. XRSI is calling on manufacturers, policymakers, and advocates to shape this together.
The proposed signal
One light. Every pair.

A simple, universal visual signal that tells bystanders exactly what a pair of AI glasses is doing – without relying on apps, notifications, or manufacturer goodwill.

Solid red
A camera is actively capturing video, photos, or audio. If the light is on, you are on. Mandatory, tamper-evident, and manufacturer-enforced.
Live
Blinking white
The feed is being streamed in real time to a remote party. You are not just being recorded – someone is watching live, somewhere you can’t see.
Off
Dark
Nothing is being captured or streamed. A dark indicator is a trusted silence – not an assumed one. No hidden defaults, no passive collection.
