XRSI’s Ongoing Collaboration with Metaverse Standards Forum Reinforces Focus on Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity

San Francisco (USA), April 11th, 2023XR Safety Initiative(XRSI), a 501(c)(3) global non-profit Standards Developing Organization (SDO) promoting privacy, safety, security, and ethics in immersive and emerging technologies, is pleased to provide an update on its ongoing partnership with The Metaverse Standards Forum. Since joining as a Principal Member last year, XRSI has been working diligently to support the development of interoperability standards while providing privacy, safety, security, and ethics oversight for an open Metaverse.

XRSI’s founder and CEO, Kavya Pearlman, serves as the co-chair for the Forum’s Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity Exploratory Group, bringing her subject matter expertise and representing XRSI alongside Dr Louis Rosenberg, Chief Scientist at Responsible Metaverse Alliance and XRSI Global Technology Adviser. Their leadership in the group reinforces the need for strong privacy and security measures in the rapidly evolving Metaverse landscape.

The Metaverse Standards Forum, hosted by the Khronos Group, brings together leading standards organizations and companies for industry-wide cooperation on identifying interoperability standards essential to building the open metaverse. Principal Members include Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, Adobe, Google, Unity, HTC, and the World Web Consortium.

The Forum focuses on pragmatic, action-based projects such as implementation prototyping, hackathons, plugfests, and open-source tooling to accelerate the testing and adoption of standards, while also developing consistent terminology and deployment guidelines. This approach enables the Forum to coordinate requirements and resources to foster the creation and evolution of standards within standards organizations working in relevant domains.

Neil Trevett, President of the Khronos Group and chair of Metaverse Standards Forum, expressed his enthusiasm for XRSI’s involvement, stating, “We are truly excited to have Kavya Pearlman and XRSI join and co-chair the Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity Exploratory Group. Their expertise and commitment to privacy and security will be invaluable in shaping the future of the Metaverse. It’s an honor to work alongside such dedicated and knowledgeable professionals who are passionate about creating a safe and inclusive digital environment for everyone.

Ensuring safety, privacy, and trust is vital for the successful digital transformation journey of governments, organizations, and individuals alike. In line with its mission, XRSI has recently published a standard definition of the Metaverse to provide a comprehensive understanding and foster collaborative efforts. According to XRSI, the Metaverse is “a network of interconnected virtual worlds with the following key characteristics: Presence, Persistence, Immersion, and Interoperability.” The full definition can be found here: https://xrsi.org/definition/the-metaverse

XRSI calls on all key stakeholders, including privacy professionals, cybersecurity experts, security organizations, policymakers, technologists, and researchers, to join the Forum and the Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity (PCI) group to contribute to the development of robust standards for the Metaverse. Open standards enable consistency across multiple Metaverse implementations, and XRSI will contribute its knowledge to the overall Metaverse standards being worked on by The Metaverse Standards Forum and its members.

Let’s join forces to shape the next iteration of the internet. The future of the Metaverse needs every stakeholder to play their part, ensuring a safe, secure, and inclusive digital environment for all. By collaborating and sharing our collective expertise, we can pave the way for a Metaverse that not only revolutionizes the way we interact and connect but also upholds the highest standards of privacy, security, and ethics. Together, we can build a Metaverse that respects user rights, fosters innovation, and creates opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background or location. Join XRSI, the Metaverse Standards Forum, and other forward-thinking organizations in this mission to make the Metaverse a better, safer, and more inclusive space for generations to come.
